From what I could follow, the most positive thing I heard about Chen's influence was that it would not hurt at the polls. Did anyone say that it would help DPP candidates obtain votes? Contrast this with several people we met with who said Ma would help legislative candidates.

Concerning the US and Taiwan independence, he wrote:

I tried to emphasize that independence activists were stuck with the fact that Americans are torn between realism and idealism on this issue--as we are on most major international issue.
